Acne Skin Products That Really Work
What are the Best Acne Skin Products
There are so many competing acne skin products available today that selecting the right ones can be a confusing experience. Each patient has individual needs. Some will respond better to one product than to another and it is simply not possible to predict which one will be most effective in advance.
It is probably worth talking to your pharmacist, health practitioner or dermatologist. These people are well-placed to offer expert advice and can save a great deal of time, trouble and expense. The advice given may well be to try those medications which have the best proven track record first. It is undoubtedly better to deal with acne as soon as possible, as left untreated it is more likely to result in severe scarring and possibly even real facial disfigurement.

Broadly speaking, acne skin products fall into one of two categories: conventional pharmacological medications and alternative or home remedies.
Conventional Medicine
Overall, the most effect acne skin products (applied topically directly to the affected skin) are over-the-counter lotions or creams containing the active ingredient benzoyl peroxide. A range of concentrations is available, although research indicates that they are all effective to much the same degree. However, the lower concentrations tend to have less severe side effects. Benzoyl peroxide is an anti-inflammatory product which also has an anti-bacterial effect and reduces sebum production, making it one of the best acne skin products. Side effects are generally not problematic but it may cause skin irritation and dryness.
Vitamin A helps reduce acne symptoms by slowing down the production of sebaceous oil. Effective acne skin products contain retinoids which are based on vitamin A. These are used topically – meaning that they are applied to the skin. Retinoids also have a useful anti-bacterial action. The main drawback is that severe skin irritation that may occur. Retinoids should never be used by pregnant women or nursing mothers. Retinoid treatments include products such as Retinol, Tretinoin and Adapalene.
Lotions based on azelaic acid have been proven to be effective in cases of mild to moderate acne. Typically available as a cream at 20% concentration, these acne skin products are less irritating than retinoids although a significant side effect is reduction in skin pigmentation. This may make these products unsuitable for dark-skinned users. Azelaic acid products include Acnederm, Azelex and Finacea.
Alternative Treatments And Home Products
Over the years, many natural products have been proposed as acne treatments. Despite the lack of sound clinical evidence supporting their effectiveness, they remain very popular. Unlike many conventional pharmaceutical products, these alternatives have few if any side effects.
An enormous range of natural ingredients has been employed in acne skin products, including mint oil, citrus fruits and olive oil. There are simply too many competing recipes and potions to describe here. It may be best to consult a pharmacist or health practitioner for advice, or at the very least conduct some online research, before deciding which ones are most worth trying out.
A variety of commercial herbal acne skin products is available over-the-counter and online. These too are unsupported by clinical evidence although some users offer anecdotal reports in support of their effectiveness. As a result it can be difficult to ascertain whether they are worth trying. Also be wary of the most expensive acne skin products. Time and again, people report that inexpensive products are at least as effective.
